Sheriff’s Office expands drug drop box program

The Livingston County Sheriff’s Office has added additional drug drop boxes at locations in Caledonia and Dansville.

The boxes, which join an existing drug drop box outside the entrance to the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office in Geneseo, allow residents to dispose of unwanted medications.

The Sheriff’s Office has partnered with the Livingston County Department of Health, Genesee Valley Health Partnership and the Healthy Communities that Care Coalition/CASA to purchase two new drug drop boxes.

The Sheriff’s Office then partnered with the Village of Caledonia and Caledonia Police Department to place a drop box at the village office, 3095 Main St., Caledonia.

A partnership with the Town of North Dansville, Village of Dansville and Dansville Police Department saw a box placed at the North Dansville Town Hall, 14 Clara Barton St., Dansville.

Like the drug drop box at the Sheriff’s Office, 4 Court St., Geneseo, the new drug drop boxes are accessible 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Deputy sheriffs will routinely check the boxes and remove the items, which are then destroyed. There is no form to fill out or documentation required; all drop offs are anonymous.

“We are proud of these new partnerships and the drugs that these drug drop boxes will take off the street,” Sheriff Thomas J. Dougherty said in a news release.

The drop box outside the Sheriff’s Office was installed in September 2014 and has collected more than 1,500 pounds of unused or unwanted drugs.
